India Tech Layoffs vs the GCC Boom: Where the Jobs Actually Are in 2026
July 23, 2026 · 8 min read
If you follow tech news, 2026 feels grim: layoffs everywhere, deferred onboarding, fewer campus offers. But that's only half the story. Underneath the headlines, an enormous amount of hiring is happening — it's just moved. Here's the honest map of India's tech job market and how to position yourself.
The layoffs are real
Global tech layoffs crossed 168,000 in the first half of 2026. Microsoft added another ~9,000 cuts in June, Intel ran a second wave through its Bengaluru and Hyderabad centres, and several majors trimmed India delivery teams as part of "AI-first" reorganizations. Mid-tier Indian IT and fresher hiring took a visible hit — one large firm cut its fresher intake guidance and saw recruits flag onboarding deferred by seven months or more.
But the GCCs are booming
Here's what the doom headlines miss. India's Global Capability Centres — the India offices of multinationals like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and JP Morgan — are hiring hard. GCCs added roughly 22,000 net roles in a single month (May 2026), and are on track for 1.2–1.4 lakh net new roles in 2026, comfortably outpacing the layoffs. GCC openings are up 31% year over year, and the ecosystem is projected to reach $100 billion and employ ~25 lakh professionals by 2030.
The catch: this hiring is concentrated. GCCs want AI/ML (a priority for 63% of them), data engineering, platform engineering, and security. Mid-level engineers in non-AI teams are being let go; AI-fluent and platform engineers are being hired. The two tracks are pulling apart.
The quiet shift to Tier-2 cities
Another under-reported trend: the jobs are spreading beyond the metros. Tech hiring in Coimbatore, Indore, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh grew ~18% year over year, while Bengaluru and Pune stayed flat. If you're outside the big metros, the opportunity is coming to you — and remote work removes the geography question entirely.
What this means for you
- Move toward the AI-fluent track. The widening gap is the whole story. Even basic AI-integration skills move you from the "being cut" side to the "being hired" side. See the highest-paying skills in 2026.
- Target GCCs and global remote roles. That's where net new hiring is. Many GCC and remote roles pay well above local mid-tier IT.
- Don't rely on mass-applying. With this much churn, listings get flooded. Being discoverable beats being one of 500 applicants.
- Go remote for global companies. Remote work lets a developer in a Tier-2 city work for a company anywhere — often at multiples of local pay. Here's how Indian developers get hired by US companies.
