How to Write a Job Description That Attracts Great Remote Developers
July 18, 2026 · 6 min read
The best developers are selective — they read your job post and decide in 20 seconds whether you're worth their time. Most job descriptions fail that test. Here's how to write one that pulls strong remote candidates in.
Why most job descriptions repel good people
- The 25-item requirements wishlist. Nobody has all of it, so your best (and most honest) candidates self-select out. Great developers apply when they meet ~60%.
- Vague fluff. "Fast-paced environment, rockstar ninja, wear many hats" tells them nothing and signals chaos.
- No salary range. Top candidates skip posts that hide pay — it wastes everyone's time and reads as a red flag.
- All about you, nothing about them. Three paragraphs about your company before a word about the role or what they'd gain.
The structure that works
- A clear, specific title. "Senior React Developer (Remote)" — not "Frontend Ninja."
- One honest paragraph on the role. What they'll actually build, and why it matters.
- Must-haves (5-7 max). Only what's genuinely required. Split "nice to have" separately.
- What they get. Salary range, remote setup, growth, the team, the tech.
- A simple next step. Fast, respectful process — say what it involves.
Write for a human, not an HR template
Developers can smell corporate boilerplate. Write like a person: specific, honest, a little warmth. "You'll own our payments service end to end" beats "responsible for relevant deliverables as assigned."
Always include the range
It's the single highest-impact change you can make. Posts with salary ranges get more and better applicants, and save you from interviewing people you can't afford.
Or skip the job post entirely
Writing a great description and waiting is one option. The faster one: describe your role on RightHiring AI in plain English and get an AI-matched shortlist of remote developers in seconds — no posting, no waiting for applicants. Then reach out to the ones you like directly.
